WHY FILM?
A lot has changed in the last 13 years since we took over the theatre. First, film was dead. Then theaters were dying. Now, we are in a new era where film is back and customers are hungry for unique experiences. So, here we are planning to return film projection (alongside our current digital) to our largest auditorium.
Film is integral to understanding and appreciating the history of cinema. The recent resurgence of filmmakers choosing to shoot with this format and studios releasing new prints exemplifies that film and the analog experience are far more than a nostalgic gimmick. The medium differs from digital in that every piece of film was either touched by the makers or is a direct, tangible copy of that film, offering a unique viewing experience.
Having the ability to offer a variety of projection formats, including 35mm film, 70mm film, and 4K digital, would enable Screenland to continue growing as a Midwest icon for cinema lovers, while also contributing to communal preservation efforts in maintaining original cinematic projection.
We are running this campaign to help fund this massive project: to bring state-of-the-art film projection back to Kansas City and to continue our commitment to film education and preservation.
WHAT PROJECTION?
It’s a dual 35mm/70mm film projection system allowing the theater to run reel to reel and comes with a fully rebuilt system with modernized components and a warranty from Magna-Tech and includes everything we would need to be able to present certain films in their original format instead of the digital-only option that most movie theaters are limited to.
35MM vs 70MM?
Before the advent of digital projection, most films were projected in 35mm film. This is still the most widely used size of film used by filmmakers today. Most new releases and prints are available in this standard format.
In the last decade, the popularity of shooting in 70mm for a wider resolution and scope has exploded. Filmmakers, including Quentin Tarantino, Jordan Peele, Christopher Nolan, and Ryan Coogler among others, have shot on 70mm film and released their films with these prints. The ability to screen this larger format offers greater detail, sharpness, and a more immersive viewing experience.
Imagine being able to view Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ or Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ in 35mm, 70mm, and 4K DCP at the same theatre. That would allow the differences between the formats to shine and would allow a new generation of audience to experience the analog atmosphere of film and discover why filmmakers make these visual choices.
We recognize that Screenland thrives because of you, and we can never thank you enough for that. As part of our community, you have always shown us such support and love that we are in the unique position to consider this massive upgrade.
Please consider joining us on this journey and becoming a vital part of improving our already incredible film community.
